Sunbury United Methodist Church (SUMC) will celebrate Holy Week with several annual events at the church. The entire community is invited to any of these events. You do not need to be a member of the church.
Palm Sunday is March 29 with worship gatherings at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m. The message at each service will be "Knowing God's Way."
Maundy Thursday services will be held at 7 p.m., April 2. This is the yearly remembrance of the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. The service will be held in the sanctuary and will feature reflection, a message and communion.
On Good Friday, SUMC will host a Prayer Labyrinth from 7 a.m.- 7 p.m. April 3. The entire community is welcome to come and experience the labyrinth prayer walk, which will be available in the downstairs multipurpose room.
The labyrinth is one of the oldest contemplative and transformational tools known to humankind, having been used for centuries for prayer and spiritual growth. It is unicursal, meaning there is only one route to the center and back out again--no dead ends or tricks, as in a maze. What exists for the labyrinth walker is simply the deeply meditative and symbolic discipline of setting one foot in front of the other. It provides quiet time for the walker to pray about anything that is on their heart. While on the prayer path, you stop and pray. Pictures of Christ, His journey to the cross, candles and soft music are part of the labyrinth experience and enhance meditation and prayer. Chairs also are available for those who prefer to sit and pray in this serene space.
Children are welcome and encouraged to walk the labyrinth with their parents or grandparents and experience the wonder and peace of spending time praying and focusing on Jesus. A brief video will be available that explains what the labyrinth is and what it means for those who are interested.
Holy Week culminates with Easter Sunday services:
Easter Sunday, April 5:
6:30 a.m.: Youth-led Sunrise Service
7:15 a.m.: Sunrise breakfast served in the multipurpose room by the United Methodist Men
8:30 & 9:45 a.m.: Praise Worship
11 a.m.: Traditional Worship
The message will be "Knowing God's Possibilities."
