God is at the core of all we do.
This ministry began in 2004 with the goal of providing safe, low cost, effective fitness opportunities for all. Since then more than 630 people from Sunbury and surrounding communities have attended a fitness class at Sunbury United Methodist Church.
We strive to help people achieve and maintain physical, emotional and spiritual good health by offering a program that includes exercise, fellowship and prayer. Our classes encourage people of all fitness levels in a supportive, loving atmosphere.
Drop in classes, no advance registration or church membership required. Pay as you come! Men, woman and teens 12 and over are welcome. For safety reasons, we ask that you do not bring children to class. Classes are held in the downstairs multipurpose room in the ministry center at our 100 West Cherry St. address. Our fees are used to sustain and improve our fitness ministry, as well as support outreach programs within our local community. It is our goal to use your fitness dollars to benefit you and others whenever possible. We thank you for your continuing participation.

Fitness Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank you for the ability to exercise the body you have given me. Lord, Your Word says my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. I choose to take good care of my body so I can be healthy and strong and full of energy to serve You better and so I might be a blessing to my family, my friends, and the people You bring into my life. I offer this time of exercise today as a seed of discipline for my flesh, and a time to draw closer to You. I ask your help to move me to a higher level of fitness. And I pray that for all the good that comes from this, I give You all the praise and glory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen
Community Outreach
Each fitness session provides participants with an opportunity to be an integral part of a local mission simply by attending class.
Big Walnut Friends Who Share
Our “Proceeds Week” during the fall and winter sessions donates 100% of our class fees to Big Walnut Friends Who Share, a program that provides food and supplies to local residents at no charge.
American Cancer Society
During our spring session, the fitness ministry sponsors the SUMC American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team. The $150 team registration fee is given to the American Cancer Society. Fitness@SUMC participants are invited to walk the track during the 18 hour local Relay for Life event at the Big Walnut High School football stadium the first weekend in June. Participants also have an opportunity to join the SUMC congregation in $10 luminary sales honoring cancer survivors, those currently battling cancer, and loved ones lost to the disease. So many of us have been touched by cancer we felt it was important to be a part of the cure. We again thank all those who worked out for the cure!
