Youth Group is a great place for teens to make friends and grow closer to God in the process.
Regular youth group meetings are from 5-7 on Sunday nights, and happen a few times each month. A regular meeting consists of dinner, active games, and Bible study. Dinner is at 5:00 in the church dining room, and is provided by parents. Following dinner, the structure depends on the evening’s topic, but there is usually some game and social time, as well as some time focused on Bible study.
Each month the Bible studies focus on a specific theme. This theme is chosen by the youth at the monthly leadership meeting. All youth are welcome to attend leadership meetings, but there are specific youth who have been elected to leadership positions by the other youth in the group. Some past topics include caring for our environment, developing healthy friendships, prayer, and forgiveness of others and ourselves.
Youth group also involves social, service, and fundraising activities. Some of the social activities we have done in the past include canoeing, parties, movie nights, lock-ins, and bowling. Our service activities range from highway clean-up, to summer work mission, to the 30-hour famine. Past fundraising activities include parking cars on Labor Day and Memorial Day, making lemon shakes, and sub sales.
While these are all events that youth group has done in the past, it is hard to say what youth will choose to do in the future. It is a premise of the SUM youth group that youth are leaders within the group and play an active role in making decisions for youth activities and Bible studies.
If you have questions or concerns about anything related to youth group, please contact our youth pastor Katy Wright.
